AN INTERVIEW WITH BEENA PAREKH
 

-Beena Parekh, the Principal of Harmony Montessori, is a certified Montessori Directress – AMI.

-Her interest in understanding the psyche of a child has driven her to study Psychotherapy, Play therapy, Hypnotherapy etc.

-She is an NLP trainer and a Reiki, Pranik and Theta Healer.

-She also works with color, chakras, crystals and Bach flowers for healing purposes.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START A MONTESSORI SCHOOL?
I visualized a world in which every child was driven from within to constantly grow, competing with only themselves, giving their best effortlessly and striving for perfection in all areas of their existence. This behaviour has been observed in a Montessori child, they always work towards their own peace, love and joy which in turn uplifts the society. Maria Montessori once said, “Establishing lasting peace is the work of education; all politics can do is keep us out of war.” Harmony aspires to transform the world one child at a time.

HOW DID HARMONY MONTESSORI BEGIN?
When my first daughter joined preschool I had to sit with her and help her settle down for a month, that’s when I realised my true joy was in work with children. 8 years later with both my daughters in full time school, I joined the Montessori Institute to give shape to my dream.
The training shifted my perception about education, psychology and spirituality completely. The whole experience was so overwhelming and enriching, that I felt compelled to pass it on to our society.
On the 20th of January 1999, with the support of my husband, I created Little Angels Montessori, the journey began with just 2 children and 3 adults. Within no time I changed the name to Harmony Montessori and implemented the principles of Integral Education which my teachers and I were exposed to at the Aurobindo Ashram in Pondicherry.

TELL US MORE ABOUT THE PRINCIPLES OF HARMONY..
Harmony literally means unified, smooth flow of energy.
Our objective is to align and integrate the mental, emotional, physical and intellectual being of a child at his/ her highest and best level.
As Maria Montessori says “The ‘absorbent mind’ (Childs mind from birth to 6 years) welcomes everything, puts its hope in everything, accepts poverty equally with wealth, adopts any religion and the prejudices and habits of its countrymen, incarnating all in itself. This is the child.”
Everything the child is exposed to plays a critical role in the formation of their overall personality but we believe it is equally important, how they learn what they learn.
Therefore our approach is completely process oriented, all accepting, respecting, and helping them to find their own gifts. Guiding them in their quest of becoming independent, forming their ego, self respect, and self esteem. Focusing on their positives and overcoming challenges.
Children naturally work towards their progress and most of the time external interference can deteriorate their drive and cause an unhealthy dependence on adults. Keeping this in mind Montessori classrooms are not teacher centric rather they completely revolve around the children and the teachers simply nudge the child to find the right direction when needed.
To conclude I would like to say that Harmony is a beautiful environment where diverse energies come together, flow in synchronicity while operating out of their highest and best potential.
